"The only taxonomic work on this subject of any significance before that year was still entitled 'Historia Fucorum (1768)'. The author of this first monograph of the algae was Samuel Gottlieb Gmelin . The 'Historia Fucorum' was conspicuous because of its careful descriptions and its illustrations" (Stafleu. Linnaeus and the Linnaeans, p. 253).
